We have all watched trees grow with roots that reach deep into the soil for life-sustaining nutrients, massive trunks that stand fast in the torrent, and leaf-filled branches that thrust into the air in their search for the sun. And where an obstacle exists that limits a tree’s access to life-giving rays, it shifts its woody density and bends to the light. The image of such a tree, mere yards from where I sit, is an apt analogy for this moment in history.

Although there is much to be anxious about in our current social climate, I have been heartened to see the quality of the people this country attracted to government service. Sadly, I only became aware of them as they left our service. I have been humbled by the examples they set, their faithfulness to an ideal, and an oath. I marveled at the courage and professionalism of an ambassador who served our country faithfully, at the courage of a colonel who served our country honorably and well, and for the lawyers who pursued justice for our democracy. These men and women have all been moved to serve. It is my hope that I will be worthy of the sacrifices they made on behalf of all of us.

There are many parallels currently drawn to dark times in our recent history. These are serious challenges that require a serious civil response. And for these challenges to come in the midst of a pandemic only heightens the peril. Yet, I am encouraged by the examples of those who had stood and delivered when it was necessary. Just like that tree I contemplate in the morning sun, we too will need to stand firmly, lean in, and bend to the light.
