This year has been fraught with concern. There have been so many reasons for worry that they are difficult to prioritize. We don’t seem to be paying attention to so many issues that must be resolved – urgently. Anxiety builds daily.

Years ago, I adopted a point of view that my father passed on to me from Alcoholics Anonymous during his struggle for sobriety; it is in the form of a prayer.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

I know that I alone will not change the world; forces in motion are well beyond my ability to perceive, let alone influence. Things I can change are essentially about me and the life-long challenge to live the ideals I’ve come to value. I understand that others have the same impetus – to live their dreams.

I accept, with serenity, that I am not meant to change anyone’s mind or viewpoint; that is solely a personal process. Yet I believe we will come together in the work we must do as neighbors, friends, and citizens. So let us begin – soon.
